Soft Tissue

A poem by Adrian Patenaude

stop saying your heart is broken
it's not porcelain
shattering on tile
discarded in black plastic

stop saying your heart is broken
it's not porcelain
glued together
fragile on kitchen counters

your heart's not porcelain
it's live muscle, squeezing
torn, but that'll soon be scar tissue
stop saying your heart is broken

it's never stopped pulsing
you're as human as you ever were
i know it feels like cardiac arrest
but it's just a panic attack

please believe me, breathe
slow your pulse
the pain's as real as it ever was
but your heart's not porcelain
